Exfoliating VS. Deep Cleansing: What's the Difference?

Valerie England

I was having a casual conversation with a good friend of mine recently and she was explaining to me her skin regime. In her regime, she described to me how she uses her Clarisonic (motoroperated facial cleansing brush) to exfoliate her skin. I thought to myself, “poor thing, she thinks she’s exfoliating.” I also thought about how this may be a common myth and what a great topic to discuss. So what’s the difference?

Deep Cleansing is common and standard in most people’s skin regime. It’s an essential step because it removes impurities like dirt, sweat, and pollutants. If not removed, these impurities can cause acne and bacterial infections. Sounds dramatic, I know, but cleaning your skin should not be optional. It’s not just for vanity purposes, but also for your health.

Deep cleaning the skin is most effective when using a manual (NVEDEN Waterproof & Silicon Facial Brush Cleaner) or a motor-operated brush (Clarisonic Mia Smart ). Be sure that the brush is not abrasive as this can lead to harming and scarred skin tissue.

Now that we know what deep cleansing is, let’s talk about exfoliating...

Exfoliating does what cleansing can’t do alone! Healthy skin naturally sheds dead cells. Exfoliating safely reveals a new fresh layer of skin. It’s a commonly skipped step but is so key for removing dead surface cells to allow products to work more effectively. Unlike cleansing, I recommend exfoliating 2-3 times per week. Exfoliating is key because it allows your skin to absorb products better, and an added bonus is that your skin feels like butter!

There are a wide variety of exfoliating products on the market. I recommend using a gentle enzyme exfoliator like Amore Pacific’s Treatment Enzyme Peel Cleansing Powder. It’s mild enough to use daily and it has a unique powder-to-foam formula that instantly leaves your skin feeling new and refreshed.

Another industry favorite is M-61 Powerglow Peel. We live busy and productive lives, but with this product, there’s no excuse. It contains some of my favorite ingredients like glycolic, vitamin K & and chamomile all packed in a travel-friendly individually packed wipe. In less than 1 minute and 1 step, you can safely and effectively glow on the go!
